Rubber Egg Science Experiment

by Jenn

Have you ever heard of the Rubber Egg Science Experiment?  I hadn’t heard about it until a few months ago when my daughter, Vayda asked me if we could try it.  I think she heard about it from her teacher or something.  Of course, I let her do it because I had to see if the egg turned to rubber or if someone was tricking Vayda.   We have everything we needed to complete the Rubber Egg Experiment and it was super easy.  Putting everything together took maybe five minutes, the hardest part was waiting to see if it worked.

All I have to say about the experiment is that it is AWESOME, and I highly recommend trying this experiment with your child, even if they are not into science I bet they’ll want to be part of this one. If you have a child who loves science, or you want to get involved in science, the rubber egg experiment is an awesome place to start.  I don’t have pictures of it, but I can tell you exactly what to do.    It’s easy so the pictures shouldn’t matter much, plus you’ll be even more surprised when it’s all said and done. Just a heads up the experiment takes about three or four days.  We left our egg in four days just to make sure.

Materials needed:

  • 1 Egg
  • Vinegar
  • Glass or Mason Jar large enough for egg to fit in

Procedures:

  • First, you’ll place the egg inside a drinking glass.
  • Next, pour enough vinegar into the glass or mason jar to completely cover the egg.
  • On the 2nd day, we changed the vinegar, but I have also heard that you don’t have to change it.  Vayda and I did it just to be safe and let it sit for two more days, for a total of four days.
  • Remove the egg from the vinegar.  It’s cool the egg changes into a rubbery consistency because the vinegar reacts with the calcium that is in the eggshell and changes the texture to a rubbery state.
